Apps + Vehicle..what?!

Just as apps have transformed smartphones and tablets, car console screens are the next frontier!

Why apps? Because automakers say they are trying to fill in a big gap in their customers electronic lives.

FACTS:

Ford Motor Company will be announcing it is doubling the number of apps available for its Sync in-car infotainment system to 10 at the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show!

Drivers can use the car's voice command system to select music over Ford Sync.

Apps are expected to multiply to dozens or even HUNDREDS over the next few years!

Automakers are being careful to roll out only those they don't think will raise issues about driver distraction.

Thursday's Thought-Winter Driving Tips

It may be a pretty spring-ish day in Tennessee, but the crazy low temps aren't over yet!

The weather outside is frightful – but driving in it can actually be delightful! There are a few do’s and don’t’s that we always like to remind ourselves of at this time of year and thought we’d share them with you, since the rest of this month equates to travel for the lot of us.

We mentioned in the title not to melt ice with hot water. Specifically, never pour hot water onto your windshield, as it can crack the glass. However, do use winterized windshield wiper fluid to ensure your wiper sprayer doesn’t freeze over or crack. And we know the “vacation” you’re on is often far from being a truly relaxing vacation with a leisurely pace, but make sure you do set aside a few spare moments to be able to clear snow and ice from the windows so you have visibility. An easy thing to forget: clear snow and ice from your headlights and taillights, too.

Now, it might seem like an odd idea to wash your car these days, but it will remove road salt and dirt; that grime can prematurely age the body of your vehicle. Guess maybe we need to think about taking showers more often if lack of bathing equals premature aging.

Mom always told us to make sure we never had less than a half a tank of fuel in case of an emergency, and in winter her advice is even more sound, because the last thing you need is to get stranded. But since Ford vehicles have fuel efficiency in mind, thanks to the EcoBoost® engines, electric power-assisted steering and hybrid technology, you’ll be getting the most out of that tank! Also make sure fluid levels are where they should be and that your tires, including the spare, have the proper air pressure and tread.

OK, so you’ve packed the car with all the presents and other festive necessities, but make sure you save room for emergency items, like a blanket to stay warm, boots/jacket/hat/gloves for if you have to be outside, a shovel, a flashlight (make sure the batteries are fresh) and snacks. And above all, make sure your cell phone is fully charged! Kitty litter or sand are also good to pack, as they can be used as additional traction should your car get stuck in the snow. And if you do get stuck in the snow or are broken down, don’t leave your car unless shelter is nearby. If you need to run the engine to stay warm, make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow; you want the interior to stay free of carbon monoxide.

Speaking of traction and driving, both can indeed be tricky in inclement weather, so remember to watch out for blind spots and pedestrians; people can be very distracted this time of year! While you may get frustrated by people poking along in front of you as they look at holiday lights or try to sort out unfamiliar surroundings, don’t follow too closely; the general rule is the vehicle ahead should pass a road marker two seconds before you. In slippery conditions, it is recommended to double the amount of space between you and the vehicle in front.

If the roads do get slick, apply even pressure when braking if your vehicle has antilock brakes. Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide on snowy or icy roads until you gain control. Don’t apply power or suddenly change directions on snow or ice.

And finally, be awake and alert behind the wheel. Taking breaks or grabbing a coffee are good things to do! And don’t drink and drive if you’ve had too much to drink at a party. Be safe out there!

Why HONDA in the war of "Green" Vehicles?

Hybrid cars have 2 cooperative drive systems-an internal combustion engine and a large battery pack with an electric motor.

There are 5 types of Hybrids:

1. Regenerative Braking-Where the energy that is generated from the heat of braking is converted and stored in a lithium ion battery for future use. Honda and Toyota use this type of assistance.

2. Parallel Hybrids-Gas engine assisted Hybrids that rely mainly on internal combustion engines with electric motors capable of low speeds up to 25 mph. Toyota uses this technology and so requires 2 electric motors to sustain the power used at idle or low speeds. Although it adds power it also increases maintenance costs.

3. Electric Engine Assist-Now know as Integrated Motor Assist. Honda was the first car company to develop and market this type of technology. It uses a low power internal combustion engine for maximum fuel efficiency and allows the electric motor to assist for extra power to pass or climb hills. Honda combines regenerative braking with IMA in all of their Hybrids for fuel efficiency and a simplistic, easy to maintain system.

4. Mild Hybrids-are not really hybrids. They have a super-sized starter that can switch the engine off at idle and then start it again when you press on the gas.

5. Electric Hybrids-known as Extended Range Electric Vehicles or more accurately serial Hybrids use lithium ion batteries to run up to 35 miles on the energy before it has to use a gas engine that augments the electric energy. Vehicles like the Chevy Volt use this system which is an expensive system requiring charging stations or long charging times on home systems. This type of system is very expensive in initial costs and unknown for future costs.

Out of all of these "Green" technologies, Honda has utilized the best and simplest Hybrid systems to use in their Civic Hybrid, Insight, and the new Honda CR-Z. With the choice of 3 types of Hybrid vehicles, Honda offers consumers vehicles for ALL!

During the luncheon we learned that the small amount of $2.00 we pay can send students all the way to Thailand! We learned of a girl who was in Thailand for two months to do missions! Fort Campbell’s Holiday House 2011 has undergone changes since the program started last year. The biggest change is that it is now in the hands of Operation Homefront, and will no longer be a Morale, Welfare and Recreation venture.

“Soliciting for funds to keep the program running is a little bit harder for MWR because of rules and guidelines,” explained Tina Englen, president of the Tennessee/Kentucky chapter of Operation Homefront. “We are a non-profit organization, so the rules and guidelines for how we raise money are a little different, and a little bit easier.”

Still, many aspects of Holiday House remain the same. The renovated housing building at 7104 Hedgerow Court will once again be the “shopping” center where command-nominated Families can select toys, books and games for the children. Parents will still have an opportunity to make selections Dec. 5 through 16.

Most importantly, Holiday House still needs the help of the community to ensure that the 2,000 plus recipients will have a nice Christmas this year.

According to Englen, approximately 715 Families were command nominated to participate in Holiday House 2011.

According to Lori Scott, president of Holiday House, that number has nearly doubled since last year. “One reason is the economy, obviously,” said Scott. “A lot of times we’re seeing that spouses have lost jobs, and the Families go from two incomes to one, yet the amount of bills don’t change.”

Scott says the number of Soldiers home from deployment also has a lot to do with the large increase of nominated Families. “Family members will often go back home while a Soldier is deployed, and there isn’t as much of that happening this time,” said Scott.

To keep up with the expanding numbers, Holiday House and Operation Homefront have placed toy collection boxes at various locations throughout the Fort Campbell, Clarksville and Hopkinsville communities.

Gift donations should be within the $15-25 price range. At certain locations, such as the tree inside The Exchange shopping center, guidelines are provided as to what items are still in high demand. Holiday House donation boxes will be set up until the Dec. 9 deadline.

Beyond the toy donation deadline, Englen says Holiday House is always accepting and appreciative of monetary donations, which can be sent to Operation Homefront’s P.O. box or made online at www.operationhomefront.net/kentucky.

“We go out, we fundraise and get sponsors to come forward,” said Englen. “The money comes through Operation Homefront, we get our board of volunteers together and they go out and spend that money for Holiday House.”

Scott says that the donation of time is also needed. “We like to have volunteers here, especially during the two weeks of shopping,” said Scott. “They are there to help the Soldiers, some of whom may not be familiar with what the kids like, do their shopping.”

Here is a story of how simple it is from one of our own employees!

I walked into work this morning and saw one of the new posters we have hanging up that talks about Ford Drives Box Tops Sweepstakes. On the posters it has a scan box for cell phones so that anyone who had the scanning ap could get information about the program. When asked what it was all about, no one really knew. That is until now. I became curious on what is was all about, especially because my boyfriend is a teacher himself. I scanned the square code with my cell phone and within seconds the website was up on my phone.

Once on the website I registered the school I wanted as North Drive Middle School in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. It showed all the earnings from 2010-11 school year and also the earnings so far for 2011-12. There is a survey on the front of the website that is broken into sections that opens and closes as you travel to different parts of the website. I did the survey and went exploring. I kept seeing on different links how to redeem online box tops, and how to earn more box tops. So the first link that I went to was a link to 5 different videos. The site said that all five videos have to be watched in order to earn 25 box tops. Another link said if I requested a brochure then 10 more box tops would be earned. After doing all of that, there was a final link on the bottom of the screen mentioning how to earn 250,000 box tops.

The Box Tops for Education website and Ford Motor Company made it simple to travel through the website and earn box tops all at the same time. It took me 10 minutes from my day to complete everything and while doing so I earned 35 box tops for North Drive Middle!

TPMS-Tire Pressure Monitoring System

A tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a tool to keep you informed about your tire pressure by using sophisticated sensors to continually monitor the pressure within each tire. The Low Pressure Indicator

will illuminate when a tire is 20 percent or more below the recommended pressure.
In the spring and fall when the weather fluctuates, the light tends to sometimes comes on more than usual. For every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature, your tires lose 1 psi of pressure.

There are also a few other reasons to why the light may turn on…
-Tire damage
-Slow leaks
-Tires deflate naturally over time, as much as 1.5 psi per month. This time-frame can accelerate if there are heavy items in the trunk.

Every heard of a 'Zip Car?' Well, we hadn't either until today! Zipcar is the world's largest car sharing and car club service. It is an alternative to traditional car rental and car ownership! Pretty interesting, huh?

Ford says it will sell 1,000 of its redesigend 2012 Focus' to Zipcar for its fleets at colleges! What does this mean? Ford is teaming up with Zipcar to put the "Ford Brand" in front of many young people that may have not considered a Ford before. Ford will subsidizing the hourly rental rate, making it $7.50 an hour for Fords (including fuel and insurance) instead of Zipcar's usual $8.50. And Ford is paying for a $10 discount on yearly Zipcar memberships for the first 100,000 new joiners, bringing that price down to $20 a year.

Backpack & School Supply Drive

Because of the many generous and kind hearts from the 5 Star Radio Group, St. B Walmart Pharmacy, Jenkins & Wynne Employees, and many friends and family members ...we were able to collect 28 completely filled backpacks! PLUS we even had some donations left over to help spread some cheer throughout the year to these kids! These donations will go to many local foster kids that are in need.

We again want to thank everyone for their support of this very worthy cause! This is something we hope to help with for years to come as there is always a great need in our Community.

Please keep in mind, this 'drive' does not end today...these kids are always in need and the Phoenix Homes of Tennessee is always open to donations.

This past Saturday, we had our Women at the Wheel Launch Party! Fun times! We set up camp in the Ford Car Showroom, greeted customers, played games, and had refreshments! We had the opportunity to meet several of our female customers! Here are a few shots from the day! Thanks for those that came out! We are so excited about this new avenue for us to meet new customers!

Boy Scout/Eagle Scout Donations!

The Honda Showroom will have a box to collect canned foods starting this Sat (7/16) and will go till next Sat (7/23). Please show support to Loren Richard's Boy Scout/ Eagle Scout Project this week by bringing in donations. Loren is incredibly involved in the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts and is helping one of his Boy Scouts, Alex Bass, create awareness around a community project. The canned food donations will go to Loaves and Fishes.

As a Boy Scout gains rank to an Eagle Scout, he has to have a final project to help the community. He has to come up with the project and manage the project. Project has to be approved by the Eagle Board. Once completed, he is one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout. Less than 10% of boys become an Eagle Scout. Highest ranking as a Boy Scout! Are you excited to buy a car but scared to go through the process? Does your vehicle desperately need service but you haven’t a clue where to start?

I’ve been pumped to launch this site for quite some time now as I know that it will serve as an open communication door for women…by women. You would think by working here I’d know all the ins-and-outs of vehicles and service… but, here’s news; I don’t! And I figured that if I didn’t then there are probably other females that have the same questions as me. So, this is a way for me to jot down my findings.

My initial goals with this site:
• for you to feel empowered with knowledge so that you can make a wise decision
• for you to have a positive experience that makes you say ‘wow’ and invite your friends
• for you to know that you got a good deal and that you’re not being taken advantage of
• give you an idea of info before you come in and help you in your research. You don’t have to have prior car knowledge to shop. I’ll help you!
• we will help you check and re-check your info (or paperwork, or whatever you need) so that you are confident with your transaction.
